In the School of Athens the two most prominentfigures are described by Vasari as Plato and Aris-totle, and this statement is supported indirectly bythe female figure above the painting, who is labelledCognitio Causarum; but some connoisseurs haveconcluded that these two dramatis personce are in-tended for Peter and Paul, and that they are repre-sented here expounding the doctrines of Christianityto the learned men of Greece and Rome.
