Lord Rayleigh and Lord Kelvin. Portrait of the British physicists Lord Rayleigh (at left) and Lord Kelvin. The Nobel Laureate Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919) was born John William Strutt. He wrote The Theory of Sound, and also did work on the energy levels in light and the Rayleigh-Jeans formula. His study of Prout's hypotheses led to Rayleigh's theories on gas densities and to the discovery of argon by Ramsay. Rayleigh won the 1904 Nobel Prize for Physics. Lord Kelvin (1824- 1907) was born William Thomson. He supported Joule's thermodynamics work and put forward a law of energy conservation. He also proposed the existence of an absolute zero temperature.
