Infected salivary gland. Clinical view of the inside of a patient's mouth, showing suppuration (the discharge of pus) from an infected salivary gland in a case of purulent parotitis. Purulent refers to the formation of pus, here due to an infection. Parotitis refers to inflammation of the parotid gland. This paired gland is the largest of the salivary glands and is located just in front of each ear. Saliva from each gland is secreted into the mouth through its parotid duct (Stensen's duct). Here, the pus is emerging from this duct. Retractors (far right) have been used to open the mouth, and the tongue is being held to one side.
