Corneal infection. Close-up of the eye of a 55 year old man with an infected cornea. A fluorescent dye has been used to highlight affected areas. The cornea is the clear dome- shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. During infection white blood cells can be mobilised and build up in the cornea, resulting in corneal infiltration (yellow areas in iris). Treatment depends on the cause of infection, but usually antibiotics in the form of eye drops will be prescribed. Without treatment the cornea can become permanently damaged.
