A huge wildfire in 1922 occured in the Claybelt area of Timiskaming District. Many towns were consumed and 44 people died as a result. The Town of Haileybury was hard hit. This statue was erected to commemorate the survivors of the fore who were forced to save themselves by hiding in the lake, swamps and wells.
