A sabre for a sapper,circa 1820/30. A heavy saw-backed blade with wide fullers on both sides,and a double-edged point. "Coulaux Freres" and "à Klingenthal" are etched above the ricassos where an "S"(Schmitt,,1821 - 1835)under a star and "CF" are stamped. Brass hilt with remnants of fire-gilding,cock's head pommel,smooth,bevelled grip,and lion head quillons. The shrunken leather scabbard with brass fittings doesn't quite match. Length 91 cm.
