Mural painting of Virupaksha and Vaishravana, Kubera . According to buddhist teachings the Four Heavenly Kings, Four Great Kings, Four Guardian Kings watch over the four directions. Paintings of all four are often seen in temple and monastery entrances. Virupaksha watches over the West. He is red and holds a serpent in his right hand and a pagoda and in his left. He is attended by Nagas, snake beings. Vaishravana, Kubera watches over the North. He is yellow His symbols are a victory banner in his right hand and a mongoose vomiting pearls in his left.
