Sir Thomas was advanced to the dignityof Earl of Kellie, to him, and to his heirs-male bearingthe name of Erskine, by patent dated the 12th of March1619. He was invested with the Order of the Garter, anddying in London on the 12th of June 1639, in his seventy-third year, was buried at Pittenweem. He was succeededas second Earl of Kellie by his grandson, Thomas, in June1639. Thomas took part with the King against the Coven-anters in 1642, and died unmarried on the 3rd of February1643. Alexander, the third Earl, was served heir to hisbrother Thomas, above mentioned, on the 18th of April1643. He was a steady loyalist, and was colonel of footfor the counties of Fife and Kinross in the engage-ment to attempt the rescue of King Charles II. Heaccompanied his Majesty King Charles II. on his expedi-tion into England; and was taken prisoner at the
