OnMarch 11, however, a boat trip was undertaken to the south to reconnoitrefor future work, and to form a depot. It was found, however, that itwas too late in the season to do much, for the ice-pack moved so rapidlywith the tidal currents in the narrow inlets as to keep the boat inconstant danger, and as soon as the water calmed new ice was formed
