Stuttgart University, ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion 2015-16. Experimental building structure using new techniques and materials

The new ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion 2015-16 is currently being assembled on site. As a new kind of segmented timber shell the fabrication and construction system is based on newly analysed principles from the constructional morphology of sand dollars as well as the elastic bending and robotic sewing of beech plywood. The design consists of 151 custom laminated lightweight beech plywood segments. In order to combine these ultra-thin plywood strips into a structurally stable configuration, newly developed robotic sewing techniques for prefabrication and manual lacing on site are applied
