Kaketi, awine not unlike Carlowitz, is grown in consider-able quantities in the Caucasus. There are twokinds, red and white, but the former is consideredthe best. Though sound and good, it is cheapenough—one rouble the quart. Tobacco is alsogrown in small quantities in parts of Georgia andmade into cigarettes, which are sold in Tiflis atthree kopeks per hundred. But it is poor, rankstuff, and only smoked by the peasantry TIFLIS—BAKU. 13 TIflis has a large and important garrison, but Isnot fortified. Its topographical depot is one ofthe best In Russia, and I managed, not withoutsome difficulty, to obtain from it maps ofAfghanistan and Baluchistdn. The latter I sub-sequently found better and far more accuratethan any obtainable in England. The mostInsignificant hamlets and unimportant camel-tracks and wells were set down with extraordinaryprecision, especially those in the districts aroundKeldt. There is plenty of sport to be had round shooting is free excepting over certain tractsof country leased by the Tiflis , snipe, and woodcock abound, andthere are plenty of deer and wild boar withineasy distance of the capital. Ibex is also foundin the higher mountain ranges. For this (if forno other reason) Tiflis seems to be increasing inpopularity every year for European tourists. Itis now an easy journey of little over a week
