It issaid a syndicate of capitalists are trying tocorner the salmon industry, at present dividedamong the people of Ilwaco and Chinook on theWashington side. Representatives of the syndi-cate have been quietly spying out the district forsome time past, and have given direct evidenceof their intention. Two schemes are TELLS ITS OWN STORY. 300 WESTERN FIELD One is to extend the fishing grounds for poundnets on the north and west sides of Sand a number of years the channel there hasbeen gradually filling up, and through that pas-sage the only salmon that enter Bakers Bayrun. They would extend the grounds at themouth of this channel, establishing traps whichwould cut off the hundreds of traps farther upthe bay, causing a great loss to the people whoare interested in them, and who have been beenestablished there for many years. By commonconsent certain lines have been recognized inthe past, lines which were established by thegovernment. The syndicate desires to havethose lines changed, claiming the channel is nolonger suitable for navigation, which is correct,and that the fishing grounds should be utilizedand that it is ready to make use of them.
