London, UK. 26 August 2016. A woman sets up the vigil outside the Stock Exchange to commemorate the 3 protesters shot in 2006 in a mass protest in Bangladesh against open-cast mining at Phulbari by British company, Global Coal Resources Management. The vigil called for the company to end plans for the mine and to be de-listed from the Stock Exchange Alternative Investment Market. The mine would displace 130,000 farming families, destroy 14,600 hectares of fertile land, threaten clean water resources and have a devastating impact on one of the world’s largest mangrove forests and UNESCO heritage site, the Sunderbans.
