Mandatory credit Sir James Chadwick. Portrait of the British physi- cist Sir James Chadwick (). Educated at Manchester University, Chadwick worked under Rutherford on the bombardment of elements with alpha particles. In 1920, he computed the positive charge on the nuclei of some atoms. This work fit- ted in with Moseley's theory of atomic numbers. In 1932, Chadwick reinterpreted experiments by Bothe and Joliot-Curie and discovered the neutron. The neutron turned out to be the most useful particle for initiating nuclear reactions. In 1935 Chadwick won the Nobel Prize for discovering the neutron. During World War 2 (1939-1945), Chadwick served as head of the UK's atomic bomb project.
