After a little , however,the enemy retired, without giving battle. The next day ho proceeded asfar as Curran, twenty-six miles south of Springlield. Here, learning thatthe enemy were in force west of him, and fearing lest his counnunicationwith Springfield should he cut ofl, he determined, having first consultedwith his oflieers, to return again to Springfield, which he did rebels followed him, and encamping at Wilsons Creek, about tenmiles south of Springfield, scoured the country with their cavalry, gather-ing supplies by foraging, and preparing themselves to make an attack withoverpowering numbers.
