Statistics of passen-ger interchange time for Peter Witt and double-endcar are given in Table II and III. Fare Boxes and Transfers There has been a serious question as to whethera fare box was efficient in collecting odd fares. Ithas been claimed that with the collection of odd faresit has been impossible with heavy loads for a con-ductor to observe whether all passengers drop in theexact fare. To determine the correctness of such acontention observations were made on a car operatingin rush-hour traffic where a total of 340 passengerswas carried in three trips. Two checkers were assignedto the car so as to guarantee correct data. It was. PASSENGER BOARDING PETER WITT CAR AT CENTRAL SQUARE,YOUNGSTOWN found that 229 tickets and transfers were collected dur-ing this period, leaving a total of 111 passengers onboard of the car for whom there should be 6 cents , the cash in the fare box should have been$ Actually, the amount of cash was $ Thisdifference of 7 cents might have been a case of onepassenger getting by and another depositing one centshort, or the entire amount might have been distributedamong several passengers. On the basis of this test, the efficiency of collection was 99 per cent. The fare box is surely a very convenient method ofcollecting the fare so far as the passenger is concerned.,If he has the exact fare, either in cash or in tickets,he has only to deposit it in the box, and there is no delaysuch as occurs when there is a physical transfer ofthe fare to the conducter. Transfers should be issued with the smallest delay, therefore the design of the trans
