Lumbar vertebra (L3), artwork. This is the vertebra's upper (superior) surface. The frontal (anterior) surface is at top, and the rear (posterior) surface at bottom. The vertebral body is at upper centre (with half an intervertebral pad, grey), with the spinous process at bottom. At far left and far right are the transverse processes, with the bony protrusions between them being other processes. The spinal cord ends above this level, and spinal nerves (yellow) pass through the central gap (the vertebral foramen) and branch off at left and right. There are 5 lumbar vertebrae in the lower back.
