Pancreas, light micrograph
Light micrograph of a section through the pancreas. The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the intestine from closely packed acini (clusters of secretory cells, dark pink). Pancreatic secretions neutralise the acidic contents coming from the stomach as they pass into the small intestine (duodenum). Islets of Langerhans (clusters of pale pink at centre right) secrete insulin and glucagon into the blood to regulate blood sugar levels. Outlined in blue at centre is a pancreatic duct that carries pancreatic secretions the digestive tract. Magnification: x200 when printed at 15cm wide.
