The introduction of felt hats is credited to a Swiss,in Paris, in 1410, and in 1440 it is saiil to have be-come a common article of wear for travelers. HAT. 1071 HAT. In 1449, Charles VII. mailc his triumphal entryinto Kouen, wearing a felt hiit lined with red velvetand snrniounteil with a tine j)lnnie of feathers. Thisset the fashion, and hats soon superseded the oldchaperons and hoods. Chaueer, who wrote during the latter part of thefourteenth century, rejiresents the merchant as wear-ing a Flandei-3 heaver hat. This may antedate ourSwiss friend mentioned above.
