The Lion of Chaeronea, Boeotia, Greece
Illustration from Outlines of European History published in 1907. Philip II of Macedonia & his son Alexander the Great defeated Thebes in the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC. The Thebans erected a gigantic statue of a lion near the village above the tomb of the Thebans killed in battle. It was rediscovered in 1818 by accident when a horse stumbled on the marble. Later excavations revealed skeletons believed to be Theban & ashes believed to be Macedonian dead.
