American admirals (l. to r.:) Spruance, King and Nimitz on an airfield on an island in the Pacific, 1944 or 1945. Ernest Joseph King (1878-1956) was the chief of staff of the American Navy and head of  naval operations (December 20, 1941-November 1945. Chester William Nimitz (1885-1966) was commander in chief of the American Pacific fleet between December 1941 and September 1945. Raymond Ames Spruance (1886-1969) was commander in chief of the American Fifth Fleet of the Pacific, then chief of the American Pacific fleet (November 1945).
