A gentleman named Daniel Massiah with hugely swollen lower legs, suffering from the glandular disease of Barbados. The shoeless right leg is resting on a stool. The author mentions that the disease has also been called elephantiasis; he suggests that it is a disease affecting the glands of the lymphatic system. Elephantiasis is a symptom of a variety of diseases, where parts of a person's body swell to massive proportions. Engraving from 1784 by James Newton.
