Echocardiography. Doctor carrying out an echocardiography (ultrasound) test on an elderly man. The doctor holds a transducer to the patient's chest in order to produce an image of his heart on the monitor. Electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes on the man's chest show when the heart is beating, allowing the ultrasound image to be easily interpreted. Echocardiography is an ultrasound technique used to study the heart's structure and function by \bouncing\" high- frequency sound waves off it. The transducer emits the sound waves and receives returning signals. Echocardiography is used in diagnosing heart disorders and for monitoring heart function."
