GEMS - JEWISH TRADITION A lithographic plate illustrating a variety of different magical gems, and [top] the twelve-stoned emblem called the Breast Plate of the Jewish High Priest. Each stone is associated with a magical tradition, and with one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The Jewish historian Josephus (1st century AD), recorded how the pectoral used to shine with a light of its own and 'God announced victory in battle by means of the twelve stones on the breast of the high priest' - for this reason, the Greeks (who reverenced the solemnities of the Jews) called the pectoral Logion, or 'oracle'. In Exodus, the instructions for the manufacture of the breastplate insist that the first row shall consist of sardius, topaz and carbuncle; the second row shall be emerald, sapphire and diamond; he third row, ligure, agate and amethyst, while the fourth row should be beryl, onyx and jasper. Engraved on each should be the name of the corresponding Tribe. Nineteenth century lithograph.
