In the fall of 1883 the plagueof smallpox broke out in Mesa and anumber of people died with that dreaddisease, among whom were a number ofSister Hakes relatives. Sister Hakeshas led an active life in the Church,having always taken an especial inter-est in Relief Society w-ork. Soon afterher return to Utah from California shewas called to act as a counselor in theRelief Society at Kanosh, Millard coun-ty. In 1885 she was called to preside. over the Mesa Ward Relief position she held till about 1890,when she was made a counselor in theStake organization, and about twoyears later she was called to the posi-tion of president of the Relief Societiesin Maricopa Stake, in which capacityshe is at present diligently Hakes writes: I have a fami-ly of twelve children, six of whom havepassed to the great beyond, but I knowthat both my dead and living childrenwere and are faithful workers in thekingdom of God, for which I am trulygrateful. I have 31 grandchildren andsix g^reat-grandchildren.
