It has been shown in the text, when treating of theupper or anterior extremity, that the changes of formexhibited in different animals, may be referred to oneprinciple—the adaptation of the parts to their properuses. The head, in certain animals, may be con-sidered as performing in some measure the office ofhands. Now, if we adopt this view, we shall be ableto judge more correctly how far it holds true that thecentre of the skeleton, to which the head belongs,remains permanent in its form, compared with theextreme parts. We have seen that it is the opinion of somenaturalists, that all the varieties in the conformation ofthe skeleton admit of being explained according to alaw, by which the central parts preserve an uniformshape, whilst the extremities are incident to
