The seven-branchedcandlestick is represented in sculpture on thearch of Titus at Rome. At Babylon andNineveh gold is said to have been lavishlyapplied in gilding sculpture, and even walls ;but it is suggested that an alloy of copper, theaimchalaim of the Greeks, was the metal inreality used for this purpose. The heroes ofthe Greek epic had golden shields andhelmets ; breastplates and other largepieces of golden armour are among therecent discoveries at Mycena;; at Kourioumin the island of Cyprus also great stores ofgolden ornaments of a very early age havebeen discovered.
