Heart surgery. Syringe needles being used during the insertion of a blood bypass line in the neck. The thinner needle at left was used to locate the blood vessel, and is being replaced by a thicker needle at right. This will in turn be replaced by a bypass line. This is used to reroute blood from the heart and through a heart-lung machine, which takes over the operation of the heart and lungs. A similar bypass will be inserted at the groin. This allows surgery to take place on the heart.
