Gaveston's head shown to the Earl of Lancaster. Piers Gaveston, 1st Earl of Cornwall (c. 1284 to 19 June 1312) was an English nobleman of Gascon origin, and the favourite of King Edward II of England. In 1312 Gaveston was condemned to death for violating the terms of the Ordinances, before an assembly of barons. Two Welshmen ran him through with a sword, before beheading him.
