This print shows the fire apparatus being drawn past City Hall ^urnmg of IBarratms ^dMuseura, corner ^roabfaau ani» Jn ^trcet, in 1865 One of the best remembered incidents in Old New York. Thousands of men still living stood on the corner oppositeholding their fathers hand while the fire was in progress. A huge dead whale from the Museum lay in the streets forseveral days to the great discomfort of the neighborhood before it was removed. This fire also marked the last appear-ance of the Volunteer Firemen, an organization that had existed since the city began.
