The configuration was an Ariane 44L, with four liquid strap-on boosters. It took off from Ariane Launch Complex number 2 (ELA-2) at the Guiana Space Centre, French Guiana, on 15 June 1988. The launch was named V22, and carried two primary payloads into orbit: ESA's Meteosat P2 meteorological satellite and PanAmSat 1, the first private international communications satellite. The Amsat 3C microsatellite was also flown and successfully deployed.
