North America nebula. Optical image of the North America nebula (NGC 7000, centre). This large nebula lies about 3000 light years away in the constellation Cygnus. It glows due to ionisation of its hydrogen gas by the radiation from stars embedded in it. It is young in stellar terms, only around 10 million years old. The bright star at far left is Xi Cygni. At lower right is part of the Pelican nebula (IC 5067-5070).
