Laser eye surgery. An ophthalmologist uses an argon laser to perform surgery on the retina of a female patient. The patient's head is secured to prevent movement. The ophthalmologist is using a retinal camera to aim the laser beam, which is delivered in a series of pulses. Lasers have a variety of uses in ophthalmic surgery, such as searing (photo-cauterisation) diseased blood vessels on the retina and repairing torn or detached retinas. Such treatments do not usually require anaesthesia, and may be performed on an out-patient basis.
