Illustration of a view from low orbit of the atmosphere and surface of one of the planets of the ultra-cool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1, with one of the inner planets seen in transit across the disc of its parent star (upper left). A third planet is also seen. TRAPPIST-1 is Jupiter-sized, and its planets are Earth-sized with several in a habitable zone for life. These three planets were discovered in 2015, with four more planets discovered in 2017, with a total of three planets in the habitable zone. This system has been studied using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the ground-based TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope). TRAPPIST-1 is 39 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Aquarius. This image was published in 2016.
