Water can also be takenfrom the city mains. After entering the main tank itscourse is similar to that of the canal water. Should themain feed lines or pumps break down from any cause, twoMetropolitan injectors can be brought immediately intoaction on the auxiliary feed lines. The arrangement of the piping above the boilers allowsany battery to be cut out at any time, and, in fact, the en-tire arrangement of the piping and valves is such that anyengine or boiler or any length of pipe can be cut outshould occasion require without interfering with the run-ning of the plant. The piping is in duplicate and extraheavy in both pipe and fittings. The valves are all of theChapman Valve Companys make. All are constructedfor a pressure of 200 lbs., although the initial steam pres-. F1G. 3.—CROSS SECTION OF BOILER ROOM sure is at present only 140 lbs. The duplicate or auxiliarypiping is arranged as a loop running from the main headerin front of the boilers along the western, southern and east-ern walls and joining the main steam line again on thenorth wall. At the eastern end of the boiler room connec-tion from side to side of the loop is made by an interme-diate pipe. The main steam line is of 12-in. pipe, theauxiliary of 10-in. pipe, and the intermediate steam line of8-in. pipe. At the two points where the intermediate pipejoins the main and auxiliary piping a steam separator isprovided. All piping is protected by Keasbey & Mattisonmagnobestos covering 2 ins. thick. Behind the boilers space has been left for the installationof economizers should their use be decided upon. Behindthe boilers also have been fitted up a bath-room for theengineer and lavatories for the men. The engines, of which there are five, are Allis horizontalta
