After tsunami. Ikonos satellite image of northern Diego Garcia, in the central Indian Ocean. This is a British island that is leased to the US Navy. The naval airbase, with B-1 bombers, is at lower right. This image was taken on 1 January 2005. On 26 December 2004 there was an underwater earthquake, the largest for 40 years, between the Eurasian and Australian plates off the coast of Indonesia. Shockwaves from this created huge waves, or tsunamis, which devastated surrounding coastlines and have killed in excess of 150,000 people. However, Diego Garcia was largely untouched, partly due to the deep 450-kilometre- long Chagos trench off the island's east coast.
