Children of five years of age are much delighted with this work, and anxious tomanifest their skill in manufacturing little mats, &c. Many children evince great perseverance and refined taste, though in many cases itis but the exercise of imitation. The materials required for this work are narrow slips of coloured paper, and asquare piece of paper cut into similar slips, but left whole at the margins, not cut through,as will be seen in Plates LV., LVI. This square must be of some plain colour,—black, white, red, green. Each child receives such a square, and a number of slips of a colour different tothat of the square : also a stick with a notch at one end,
