View SSE over Dorothea Quarry slate workings in Dyffryn Nantlle, Wales, UK: flooded pits, waste tips, inclines, slate buttresses, pyramids & a Cornish beam-engine tower (R). The quarries were in use from 1829-1971. The pits, up to 500ft deep, are all flooded giving the false impression of one large pit (L). The beam-engine in the clock tower was in use pumping out water from 1906-56. The quarry was named after the wife (or daughter) of landowner Richard Garnons of the Pant Du estate. View taken from lower S slope of Mynydd y Cilgwyn. Low cloud creeps over the Nantlle Ridge & Cwm Silyn to the rear. The Nantlle Valley Slate Quarry Landscape is part of The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales which became the UK's 32nd UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 July 2021.
