Mirrors reflect sunlight onto the world's first commercial thermoelectric solar tower plant, near Seville, Spain

This 40 storey solar tower situated in Sanlucar la Mayor near Seville Andalucia Spain is the world s first commercial thermoelectric solar tower and will be joined by a second larger tower in 2013 The PS10 solar field as it is known is composed of 624 mirrors or heliostats which focus and concentrate the sunlight onto a receiver on the 115m high tower The power generated is then used to heat water which in turn produces enough electricity to power 6 000 homes The second larger tower known as PS20 when completed will power the electricity needs of a further 10 000 homes The reflected sunlight is so intense that it lights up dust pollen and water vapour in the air creating rays that can be seen for miles around As well as housing the tower technology the development also houses Sevilla PV the world s largest low concentration photovoltaic PV plant It is composed of 154 PV units each 100m2 in area which track the course of the sun throughout the day optimizing the amount of sunlight captured Sevilla PV delivers 2 4GWh of electricity into the Spanish grid The entire plant is been built by Solucar which is the parent company of Spanish energy company Abengoa SA and its solar business unit
