Code Ringing Machine.—There is now in use a code-ringing machinewhich is part of the central office equipment which is capable of givingbetter signals than can be made by hand. As many as twenty codesare available, although good service from the traffic standpoint will notpermit more than ten stations on one line, unless the conditions areunusual. In many instances the number should be much less than ten. The subscriber dials the call number in the usual way and code machine begins to ring long and short rings according to the RURAL AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES 313 number selected, and stops when the called station answers or the callingsubscriber hangs up his receiver. Reverting calls are made by dialing a reverting call number, postedon the telephones of the line, and hanging up the receiver. All the bellson the line will ring according to the code. When the called stationanswers, the ringing stops. If the called party does
