His father was a merchant and magistrate of the city of Besanc, received a collegiate education in his native place and at Dijon, wherehe distinguished himself in his studies, especially in geography, botany, andmusic. After completing his studies, Fourier was placed in a commercial house atRouen ; and in passing through Paris, he was struck with what he termed themysteries of commerce. On asking the price of some apples, which werecommon in his native town, he was surprised to find it what he deemed exor-bitantly high : eight cents was asked for an apple sold for one cent per dozenin the country.
