He was an earnest Whig and a radical abolitionist, being one ofthe leading promoters of the so-called underground railroad, his shopbeing one of the stations on the line, at which slaves on their way toCanada weTe received for shelter until they could be forwarded. Through-out life he was also an earnest member of the Congregational church andtook a leading part in its religious and charitable work. Dudley S. Tracy was born, raised and educated in Hartford townshipand in earlv life learned the carriage trade under his fathers instruction. iZ?fe<^ HISTORY OF TRUMBULL COUNTY 303 and has himself followed it the greater part of his life. In 1890 heengaged in pattern making and followed that skilled trade until 1904, whenhe retired on account of his age. He now resides upon a farm of sixty-fiveacres, but as he has never engaged in agriculture, prefers to rent his Tracys wife was Miss Edna Ann Bishop, a daughter of Gaylord andHarriet Bishop, natives respectively of Connecticut and Vermont. has for many years been active in the work of the Methodist churchand was especially prominent in connection with the work ofthe LadiesAid Society during the Civil war. Mr. Tracy has always been a Republicanand has taken active part in the local campaigns of his party.
