September of 1867 the Indians on the North Platte calleda council to confer with General Sherman. They demandedthat the building of several roads should be stopped, and par-ticularly the work on the Southern Pacific, as it interfered withtheir hunting. The General would not accede to these demands,but promised that any loss they suffered should be made goodto them. September 18, 1868, the Indians attacked our troops atRepublican River, and Lieutenant Beecher and several otherofficers were murdered. In 1871 the Apaches killed over 200white settlers, not in battle, but skulking in ambush, and shoot- ing them whereverthey met them.
