It is convenientand more economical in space to place theswitches of the controller on a drum, so that asthe drum revolves different coml)inations aremade. Each controller is provided with cut-outswitches, by which any or all the motors may bethrown out of service. It is essential that con-. ELECTRICITY AS A MOTIVE PO^yER. 485 trollers be constructed so as to open the circuitwhen heavy currents are flowingwithout the serious arcing or flash-ing which is liable to occur whena current is broken. If arcingis permitted the switches and con-tacts soon become burned and de-stroyed, so that the controller isrendered inoperative. Arcing isreduced either by inserting in thecircuit a high resistance, therebyreducing the current l)efore finallybreaking it, or ]>y the magneticblow-out. This is a device byAvliich the circuit is opened in astrong magnetic field, the action ofwhich is to dissipate and blow outthe arc which would otherwiseestablish itself.
