If arcingis permitted the switches and con-tacts soon become burned and de-stroyed, so that the controller isrendered inoperative. Arcing isreduced either by inserting in thecircuit a high resistance, therebyreducing the current l)efore finallybreaking it, or ]>y the magneticblow-out. This is a device byAvliich the circuit is opened in astrong magnetic field, the action ofwhich is to dissipate and blow outthe arc which would otherwiseestablish itself.
