In1870 Mr. Stanton was appointed Assistant to theUnited States Attorney and after a service of four-teen years in this capacity was appointed UnitedStates Attorney for the District of Connecticut onthe death of the then incumbent. Three years later he retired and devoted himself to privatepractice. Mr. Stanton has always been a Republi-can in politics, taking an active interest in thewelfare of the party. .-Xlthough he has neversought public office he was elected a member ofthe Connecticut Legislature of 1880, serving asHouse Chairman of the Committee on the Judi-ciary.
