Downing Street, London, UK. 18th November, 2015. Chair of the Care and Support Alliance (CSA) Vicky McDermott, together with two disabled customers of care services, Martha and Lisa, present a letter to a 10 Downing Street staff member outside the famous building. In the letter, the CSA warns the Prime Minister of the “mounting evidence” to support the claims of care professionals that the system is now in crisis. The Care and Support Alliance which represents over 80 charities and voluntary organisations who specialise in the care sector, presented the letter calling on the Prime Minister to urgently increase funding for the social care system in the government’s comprehensive spending review next week. Speaking ahead of the visit, the Chair of the Care and Support Alliance Vicky McDermott explained, “What began as the lone voices of grandparents, parents, families and friends in living rooms and kitchens five years ago, crying out for a desperate improvement in the funding for social care, has today become a chorus of united charities, care providers, voluntary organisations and NHS organisations demanding change. “In exactly a week’s time we will learn just what the first majority Conservative government in 18 years plans to do to protect the most vulnerable disabled and older people in England. Today I presented the Prime Minister with a letter on behalf of the Care and Support Alliance, outlining why his government must take drastic action in next week’s Comprehensive Spending Review to address the fiscal gaps in the social care system. It really does matter. Because imagine your loved one not being able to do simple day-to-day tasks that we take for granted. Maybe they need help washing themselves, getting dressed or even getting out of bed. Now imagine a world where they didn’t receive the care, the lifeline, they desperately needed. Imagine no more. That world is modern day England and it must change”.
