Roman Gladiator and Lion

The French artist and sculptor J. L. Gerome created this model in 1898 and exhibited it in a Paris salon. It depicts a Roman gladiator and the lion he just killed. The Latin phrase "Plaudite, Cives" translates "Applaud Citizens." In the ancient Roman arena, gladiators often fought beasts in contests called venationes.
