This is the first tube to take on the outwardform of the modern gas tube. 432 THE JOURNAL OF ROENTGENOLOGY THE USE OF THE PLATE SHIELD AS A CHECKIN DARK ROOM WORK The plate shield consists of a rectangular sheet of leadfrom 1-16 to 1-8 of an inch thick, 8% inches wide by lO1/^inches long, with a circular hole cut in the center 7 inchesin diameter. This size shield is intended to be used with8x10 plates and the advantage of having it % inch largerwill be at once apparent when using it with plates loaded ineither envelopes or cassettes. The purpose of the shield isto provide a simple, easy and frequent check upon the con-dition of the plates and developing and fixing solutionsthat are being used. If a plate, in good condition, be removed from the orig-inal package and carried through the developing processwith the solutions in prime condition and at the propertemperature, the emulsio
