An engagementfollowed, in which Benjamin Foster led theforces from East Machias and Jeremiah OBrienled those from Machias. This was the firstnaval engagement in the Revolutionary war,and occurred on the Sunday and Monday pre-ceding the battle of Bunker Hill. For thisspirited action Foster and OBrien received thethanks of the Provincial Congress then assem-bled at Watertown. Thomas H. Talbot, thus descended, attendedthe public schools and Washington Academyat ICast Machias, and was graduateil with hon-.
