One of a pair of mythological winged creatures with hooked beaks flanking the east window of the Romanesque apse of the cathedral in Trento, Italy, the Duomo di San Viglio.

Duomo di San Vigilio, Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: east window of Romanesque apse. Work began on the cathedral in the 1100s. Then, in 1212, the first structure was almost completely demolished to make room for a cathedral in the Romanesque-Lombard style, built by a team of Campione-based skilled workers, headed by Adamo d’Arogno. In the 1300s, the cathedral was enlarged and Gothic features added. The cathedral is dedicated to Trento’s patron saint, San Vigilio di Trento or Vigilius of Trent (c. 353 - 405), a Roman patrician who was consecrated Bishop of Trent.
